When friends come to visit

JP hopes to see more of what the rest of us have been up to. Well, truth be told, I haven't been up to much that's exceedingly exciting since Mr. Tsai and JP himself were here. So I suppose I'll just post some pretty pictures that I was supposed to have posted many months ago.

When Mr. Tsai was here, we visited Section 8 for drinks, took a walk down Union Lane, and went for more mojitos at the famous eco-builing Council House's bar off Little Collins Street. These set of photos (instax mini's) prove Muji's pens to be uselessly smudgy so I've since vouched to never leave the house without a Sharpie in the bag. Also because I secretly like to vandalise things.

On a side note, Mr. Tsai is extremely funny and lovable when semi-drunk. In the 10 years I've known him, that night was the drunkest and most care free I've seen him. More nights like this please Mr. Tsai.

We also made a few pledges with one another which we hope to be able to fulfill. First, a date in 1 year's time. And another for 5 years down the road. No, it's not a marriage pledge so don't get all excited for the wrong reasons.

Next, JP visited me and we spent good times feeling incredulous about life and the what-the-fuckisms that surrounds us. Because we both love Amelie it's become somewhat of an unspoken ritual to sacrifice the precious gold coins and take these retro b&w photobooth photos (left taken outside Flinders St. station in Melbourne, right taken at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2008).

What's with the Asian Boy/White Girl banner? It's a secret joke. See if JP is obliging enough to divulge more.

Then we do what we like to do best - prowl the city streets and laneways and take silly blackmail worthy photos of each other. Though it's not hard to imagine that everyone else here has more blackmail photos of me than I'd like to admit.

At the old GPO.

Graff on Rutledge Lane consumes the council bins also.

I think these are two of Michael Porter's famous heads, also found on Rutledge Lane.

One of the many things that I love ever so much about Melbourne, how it embraces randomness eg. in this case, street art installations.

For our love of Percy Jackson, this image was captured especially for B.

At Free Lane, we came across a suggestion box. Naturally, we obliged.

I swear the bacon was JP's idea.

A penguin. Captured for the sake of JG. Perhaps it's your turn to fill these pages with some of your many photographs.

So that's about all the photos I could update. There are a few more instax mini photos, but they're now in my mother's proud possession ie. in her wallet or somewhere where I'll never see them again, so this is about all I can post up.

What's up and coming?

Well, I've been unemployed since April, so if any company out there is looking for a graduate architect, feel free to get in contact with me. Seems like the joke is always on me because I always seem put myself in precarious unemployment whenever the economy is lower than rock bottom.

Despite all this, there is something that I'm looking forward to though. In 2 week's time, I'll be catching the Australian Chamber Orchestra performing Jonny Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver. I've been tempted to go on YouTube and listen to the piece, but I think I'll be patient this time and hear it out for real played in a concert hall myself.

Last weekend I caught a cello and pianist duo playing selections from Schumann, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff at the Hawthorn Townhall. Loved the Schumann and Rachmaninoff, still unsure about Beethoven. Sorry, genius he may be, he's just not my cup of tea (to my extremely plebeian, layman's ears) his compositions always sounds haphazhard to me with the harmonic scales thrown in seemingly at random and on some goodness-knows-what induced whim. I'm sure there's a very valid, and solid principle or reasoning behind it, but pardon maestro, I'm not a fan.

On a totally unrelated note, am I the only one who finds the blogger blogging system absolutely retarded?

Okay...good night, or rather, good morning, my good people.

_____

Yes, yes, I know I owe all of you listed on the right-hand-side emails. This weekend. Maybe.

my life, circa april 2010

what I am up to, originally uploaded by julienpaul.

Attempt number 2 at this post: This is going to be a bit of a what I am up to, in pictures.

Most of my time is being spent on my portfolio, namely the online version. Above is a render that I touched up for it of one of my fourth year projects. I will post the whole portfolio here when I am happy with it.

I'm having fun walking around Paris in spring and taking random photos of nothing much:

Josh bought me a film scanner for Christmas and I am slowly scanning old negatives from various trips (Japan) and even photography class at uni. Ellen, Jose, Andrew, remember these ones?

Meanwhile, I am going to see as many exhibitions as possible.. Below, a sketch of Munch's that I found haunting:

Well, that's it from me. Hope to see more about what you are all doing.

The 才sai Line

Here are some T-shirt designs Jack has been working on. They will be part of his own T-shirt line 才sai which will be launched shortly. 才sai is a play of a Chinese character of Jack's name with the roman alphabets, and all designs are intended to reflect small pieces of his own playfully diabolical character. In the artist's own words, All these images plays around with first impressions and how there is always more than meets the eye.

Jack has provided a few words of his own to describe his thoughts and emotions that gave birth to the graphics:

GHOST WITH A BLADE

You have been cut! Blood drips from the wound, but how? Instead of a guardian angel, seems you may have a ghost friend that secretly cuts you, and takes pleasure from it. It is a twisted and crazy world, a city made from blood, a city the grows downwards, not up… nothing is definite and constant, everything is ever changing. Maybe i'm just feeling vulnerable at the moment, and exposed.

BLOODY CASTLE

What at first seem like outline of a castle against a red sunset background, could also be blood dripping, however the innocent clouds and rainbow that floats away from the window, appear to suggest of innocence, a place of joy and happiness…Maybe, from the view of a some, a dracula, for example, such a place and setting is heavenly.
Everything has different viewpoints and perspectives, not everyone share the same feeling, nothing is as simple as black and white.

 COFFEE MURDER

At first glance it’s a simple cup of coffee, still hot and steaming, however on closer inspection, you notice the leg that hangs out from the cut, and the leaking which you first thought is coffee, now looks like blood pouring out of the cup… you also notice what at first seem like steam now have more details that may be spirits raising off the coffee.

For the innocent, they could see only the coffee,
For the guilty, they see the body and the bloody...

Maybe, for the rare few, they will see a person bathing in coffee and indulging in the bath, thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Jack would welcome any feedbacks, comments for further development and improvements; as well as expressions of interests to his works.

Drawing No.5 - Away

Drawing no.5 – Away
Roughly B4 size; Completed on 17 March 2010
Lead pencil, pastel on heavy weight paper

The past week, Jack and I have been exchanging works via email as a way of engaging peer review mainly for discussion of ideas and mutual motivation plus support. For my part, I am finding this to be an enjoyable process, and it has been interesting to share artworks with another person, and to inspire and be inspired.

What is most important to note regarding this process is that it is not the sharing of one solitary idea whereby the two of us would develop our art concurrently based on that governing idea. Instead, our approach is to begin by sharing our individual artworks to one another and from interpretation and inspiration gained from the other's piece(s) we would channel into new works of our own. This I believe is a much more conducive method of exploration of creativity and ideas without losing our own unique identity.

This drawing is inspired by another one of Jacks. His was a graphic of a castle shrouded by what seems to be a bleeding sky. Marshmallow clouds drifts across the castle top decorated by arches imitating rainbows in monotones. Bats loom in the dark keep, and one flies away from the bloody sky.
...I believe everyone sees a work of art and receives different meanings from it from one another. And I also believe one piece of art gives a different meaning and significance to each individual according to circumstances surrounding the individual during which time the work of art was experienced.--excerp from Drawing No.5 Away + some thoughts.
I saw it as something like being caged and being trapped, hence the depiction of a person with rooted to the ground on the bottom half. The root of the somber air is not depicted obviously in the drawing, however the gesture of flight, of wanting to be break free and Away suggests a longing for some kind of release and salvation.

Any feedbacks and thoughts on the drawing is very much appreciated.
